       Criteria for All Foundation Scholarships

Academic Awards of $100 are granted to students who have received funding that significantly covers their college expenses prior to the Foundation’s Scholarship. Funds made available due to Academic Awards are distributed to additional students in the form of Achievement Scholarships until the entire $120,000 has been granted.

Scholarship money may be used for tuition, room and board and fees only. The Barberton Community Foundation Scholarship program does not cover books. Unused money is returned to the Foundation.

CRITERIA - In order to be eligible for any of the following scholarships, a student must have a minimum unweighted 4.0 based GPA of at least 3.0 and have passed at least 4 out of 5 sections of the State Competency Test. The scholarship candidate must be a resident of either the Barberton School District or the City of Barberton, and they must be a graduate of Barberton High School with a minimum of two years attendance at the High School. The candidate must plan on attending college on a full-time basis. In the instance of a tie, the Scholarship money will be split evenly between the students. The Athletic Scholarship will be awarded to the varsity level senior athlete (1 male & 1 female) with a minimum of two (2) varsity letters and a GPA of 3.0 or better. The Artistic Scholarship will demonstrate excellence in the area(s) of the visual and/or performing arts. The Character Award will include a requirement of community service beyond the hours required for graduation. A student can receive only one scholarship from the Foundation program per year.

The terms and conditions of the Scholarship Program and the funding provided for the Scholarship Program from year to year are at the discretion of the Barberton Community Foundation. The enclosed criteria will be for the present calendar year of the program only. The Foundation Board of Directors will review the criteria annually, at which time changes may be initiated. In all cases, any officer, director or employee of the Foundation who has a family member who is eligible for a scholarship under this Scholarship Program, will recuse himself from any meeting of the Foundation Board or any Foundation Committee where the Scholarship Program to be made to that pool of nominees is discussed. And this recusal will be documented in the minutes of such meeting.

SELECTION COMMITTEE - The Selection Committee has been selected and approved by the Barberton Community Foundation Board of Directors. The Barberton Community Foundation does not determine who will receive scholarships under this Scholarship Program. The recipients are selected by the Selection Committee, at least a majority of whom must be independent of the Foundation. The Selection Committee will be chaired by the High School Principal and will include a High School Guidance Counselor, the Athletic Director, the Senior Class Advisor, a member of the PTA, and a representative of the Barberton Community Foundation.

INELIGIBLE PERSONS - No family member of any person on the Selection Committee or of a substantial contributor to the Foundation is eligible for a scholarship under this Scholarship Program. For this purpose, a family member is defined as the ancestor, spouse, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the spouses of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters and their spouses. A substantial contributor is a person who contributed an aggregate amount of more than $5,000 to the Foundation if such amount is more than two percent of the total contributions and bequests received by the Foundation before the close of the taxable year in which the gift or bequest was received.

RENEWALS*- All Scholarships may be renewable for up to the four years following graduation. The student must attend school on a full-time basis. Starting in 2009, a 2.0 cumulative grade point averages is required for renewal.

An official transcript containing the student’s college career grades and College Financial Aid Letter are required by July 1st of each year.

General Statement
The Barberton Community Foundation Scholarship Program will be annually evaluated by the Grants Committee who will make recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding the validity of its continuation. If the program is permitted to continue, its policies will be updated annually. Following are the 2009 application policies for renewal of 2006, 2007 & 2008 scholarships and academic awards. A total amount of $220,000 will be available for scholarships and academic awards for the Barberton High School graduating class of 2006, 2007 & 2008 who received a Barberton Community Foundation 2006, 2007, or 2008 Scholarship or Academic Award.

Scholarship/Academic Award Definition
The Barberton Community Foundation defines a Scholarship, for the purposes of this program, as a grant greater than $100 to be used to offset post high school educational costs that is paid directly to the educational institution.

The Barberton Community Foundation defines an Academic Award, for the purposes of this program, as a grant of $100 paid directly to the student as an award for their academic performance.

Deadline (July 1, 2009)
Stipulated materials for those who wish to be considered for renewal of a Barberton Community Foundation 2008 Scholarship or Academic Award are due to the Barberton Community Foundation office at 460 West Paige Avenue, Barberton, Ohio 44203, no later than July 1, 2009.

Application Materials
Barberton Community Foundation 2009 Scholarship and Academic Award applicants who received a Barberton Community Foundation 2006, 2007, or 2008 Scholarship or Academic Award must submit an official copy of their 2008-09 school year transcripts and 2009-2010 College Financial Aid Award Letter to the Barberton Community Foundation by July 1, 2009.

Scholarship Renewal Criteria
All students who received Barberton Community Foundation 2006, 2007 or 2008 Scholarships or Academic Awards are eligible, on a competitive basis, for a Barberton Community Foundation 2009 Scholarship provided they attend school on a full-time basis and demonstrate financial need.

Scholarships will be prioritized according to class rank upon graduation from Barberton High School. Scholarship amounts will be based on either the amount of last year’s scholarship or for those who received academic awards last year, the amount they were eligible to receive if they were awarded a scholarship last year.

Academic Award Renewal Criteria
All students who received Barberton Community Foundation 2006, 2007, or 2008 Scholarships or Academic Awards are eligible, on a competitive basis, for a Barberton Community Foundation 2009 Academic Award provided they have maintained the minimum cumulative GPA required by the Foundation guidelines see below "Additional Criteria", and attend school on a full-time basis. Students who receive a Barberton Community Foundation 2009 Scholarship are not also eligible for a Barberton Community Foundation 2009 Academic Award.
