The Barberton Community Foundation

The Foundation was incorporated in September 1996. It was fully funded from the proceeds of the sale of Barberton Citizens Hospital, a not-for-profit community hospital, to a for-profit hospital system. Today the Foundation is a $115 million foundation that acquired its public charity status under Section 509(a)(3) of the IRS Code. It is a Type I  supporting organization and provides support to the City of Barberton, the Barberton School District, the Barberton Health District and to tax-exempt nonprofits that provide services that benefit the citizens of Barberton. The Foundation s mission is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Barberton. 

In addition to the general fund, made up of the proceeds from the sale of the local hospital, the Foundation also has approximately 36 pass-through and endowed funds totaling $1.6 million. The Foundation looks to grow the number of endowed funds.

The Foundation has a 15 member Board of Directors that governs the Foundation. The Mayor and President of City Council serve on the Board as a result of their office. The other 13 members of the Board are volunteers from the community and are appointed by the Board and approved by City Council. Board members can serve a maximum of nine years on the Board. The Board oversees the investment of the Foundation s assets with the assistance of a professional investment advisor and a number of investment managers.

The current Executive Director has announced his intention to retire as of September 30, 2008. As a result of this decision, the Board of Directors has undertaken a regional search for a successor.

Executive Director

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and supervises a staff of four employees. These include the Controller, the Director of Programs and Scholarship, the Director of Communications and the Administrative Assistant. The Executive Director provides professional leadership and advises the Board of Directors on matters affecting the Foundation or related to the success of the Foundation. The Executive Director is charged with implementing the policies of the Board and directing all aspects of the Foundation s operations, including grant making, development, communications, fiscal policy and administration.


Candidates:
In conjunction with the Board of Directors, the ideal candidate will be able to develop, communicate and achieve a vision of economic growth, excellence in education and an improved quality of life for the citizens of Barberton, Ohio. The Foundation seeks a proven collaborative leader and fundraiser who will make a commitment to the Barberton community and serve as a facilitator and convener around community issues. The preferred candidate will be able to create proactive strategies and a realistic plan that involves all community constituents and focuses on results. The Foundation will consider candidates with a demonstrated history of successful community involvement who have served in leadership roles in the nonprofit sector, government, civic organizations or business. An understanding of nonprofit organizations gained through either professional or volunteer service is essential. Knowledge of the Barberton community is a plus. The successful candidate must be able to work with a volunteer Board of Directors, a professional staff, elected and appointed officials and a wide range of community citizens. Candidate must possess excellent communication skills, integrity and enthusiasm. Bachelor s Degree required. Graduate degree preferred. The Executive Director must live in or relocate within a reasonable time to Barberton, Ohio. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Staff Management
    • Responsible for hiring, firing and supervising the Foundation staff.
    • Conduct annual performance reviews of staff
    • Establish annual performance goals and objectives for each staff member
    • Provide periodic counseling of staff relative to goals and professional development
    • Administer Foundation policies and procedures
    • Manage the interface of staff with the Board and Board committees
  • Administration
    • Implement all Board policies, procedures and plans
    • Provide, in conjunction with the Director of Programs and Scholarships, oversight to the grant program
    • In conjunction with the Controller, manage the Foundation s budget, accounting system and all fiscal records.
    • Responsible for assuring that the Foundation complies with all IRS and other federal, state and local laws.
  • Community Relations and Development
    • Generally, work to increase the assets of the Foundation through increased general donations and the creation of new endowment funds.
    • Work with staff and Board to develop and implement donor events
    • Facilitate good relationships with donors and prospective donors
    • Serve as the spokesperson for the Foundation in the community and in Northeast Ohio
    • Attend community and organization functions and events as the representative of the Foundation
    • Maintain good relations with the leaders of the city, the school district and the health district
    • In conjunction with the Director of Communications, provide timely and responsive communications to the community, the supported organizations, clients and donors via annual reports, quarterly newsletters, press releases and general correspondence.
  • Board Relations
    • Attend Board and committee meetings and provide staff leadership by reporting on major issues, new developments and progress on existing initiatives.
    • Assure that staff is available for all committee meetings.
    • Prepare/facilitate the preparation of the agenda and information needed for all meetings.
    • Meet annually with the Personnel Committee to review staff performance. Prepare a written staff salary review and proposed salary adjustment for the coming year.

Compensation

The Executive Director is expected to earn a salary commensurate with his/her experience and appropriate for a community foundation with similar assets, service area and demographics. Some relocation assistance will be provided. The successful candidate will be expected to relocate to Barberton, Ohio.

Candidates
  • Education: A Bachelors degree is required and an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Experience: The Foundation will consider candidates from a variety of professional backgrounds. A senior executive from a similar organization; from a nonprofit organization; civic organization; or a senior executive from a for-profit business with a history of service to nonprofit organizations will be considered. The successful candidate should have proven leadership skills, first-hand experience with raising money and with developing donor relations. Knowledge of the Barberton community will be a plus.
  • Desired Abilities, Attributes and Traits:
    • Management  experience with both administrative and fiscal management; experience with developing a budget and managing a business or organization within the confines of said budget.
    • Board Relations  experience with governance issues related to a board of directors/trustees; ability to interface with and cultivate working relationships with a cross-section of a community, including elected officials.
    • Community Relations  ability to interact with the public and elected and appointed city officials; to develop contacts within the community; to effectively communicate the goals and mission of the Foundation to the public and media; and to serve as the public "face" of the Foundation; this requires the successful candidate to be visible in the community and with the supported organizations.
    • Leadership  ability to motivate the staff and Board of the Foundation and to lead the Foundation in a direction of increased donations and growth.
    • Communication skills  the successful candidate will need to be able to clearly communicate and express his/herself to a diverse community audience. The successful candidate must also be credible to the community and the Board.
    • Personable  the successful candidate must be outgoing, energetic, able to interact with individuals from all socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.
    • Integrity  the community views the assets of the Foundation as their money; the successful candidate must exhibit the highest degree of moral and ethical standards.
    • Consensus builder  the Foundation supports the city, the schools, the health district and nonprofits that benefit the citizens. The ability to build consensus and to facilitate collaboration among these entities is a requirement for success.
